Belle of Louisville gets stamp of approval

MILTON, KY — The United States Postal Service will celebrate the dedication of the Milton-Madison Bridge, connecting Kentucky and Indiana, with a one-of-a-kind postmark

The special postmark will be available beginning at 11 a.m. Tuesday, October 28 at the Milton Post Office, 21 High Street, Milton, KY 40045. It was designed by Bedford, KY, artist Vickie Eldridge.

In addition to the special cancellation, the Post Office will be selling a limited number of postcards featuring the postmark and a painting of the old Milton-Madison Bridge built in 1929. Cost: $1, which includes one of the recently released Hudson River Forever stamps.

“We are so excited about the opening of the new bridge,” said Postmaster Cecilia Oak. “The original bridge had been such an integral part of this community. We think this special postmark is a great way to mark the occasion.”

Mail order requests for the special cancellation will be available for 30 days beginning October 28. Customers should allow at least a 2-inch by 4-inch space in the stamp area for the postmark and have postage applied to cards or letters before mailing them — inside another envelope — to the Post Office.

The Postal Service does not receive tax dollars for operating expenses; it relies entirely on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.
