SMILAX, KY — The USPS Kentuckiana District announced it will proceed with a proposal to relocate the Smilax Post Office to the former Lewis Dairy Bar building at 7040 Cutshin Road.  This action was sent in motion when the landlord at the current location requested to terminate our lease.

The Postal Service held a community meeting to discuss the Smilax Post Office status on Apr. 5, 2018. After carefully considering all concerns expressed at the meeting and comments received after the meeting, the decision was made to proceed with the new space project. As discussed, the project will allow the Postal Service to continue retail operations for our customers in Smilax for the long term, as well as provide safer vehicle ingress, egress, and parking.

While the Postal Service is sensitive to the impact of this decision on its customers and the community, we properly considered community input and this decision is consistent with Postal Service objectives.  Postal Service operations are not supported by tax dollars.  To be self-sustaining, we must make decisions to ensure adequate and affordable postal services are provided in a manner that is as efficient and economical as possible.

This is the final decision of the Postal Service with respect to this matter.  There is no right to further administrative or judicial review of this decision.

The Kentuckiana District serves ZIP Codes 400-409, 411-427 in Kentucky and 471, 476-477 in southern Indiana.

The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses, and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.
