The President of the United States signed Public Law 111-365 on January 4, 2011 to dedicate the Jamaica Plain, MA Post Office in honor of fallen Marine Lance Corporal Alexander Scott Arredondo. Alex had just reached his 20th birthday when he was killed in Najar, Iraq by a sniper. He was serving his second tour of duty in Iraq at the time of his death. Public Law 111-365 designates the facility of the United States Postal Service at 655 Centre Street in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, as the "Lance Corporal Alexander Scott Arredondo, United States Marine Corps Post Office Building,” The House of Representatives version of the bill, H.R. 5877, was sponsored by MA Congressman Michael E. Capuano with the nine other MA Representatives as Co-Sponsors. For his actions during that battle, Lcpl. Arredondo was posthumously awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with Combat V and the Purple Heart. Lance Corporal Arredondo, a Randolph native, was raised in Jamaica Plain. He graduated from Blue Hills Regional High School before enlisting in the Marines. He was killed on August 25, 2004 in Najaf, Iraq during his second tour of duty. After completing a mission by securing a building in Najaf, Iraq, he was checking on the well-being of his fellow soldiers and was hit by a sniper. His commander wrote that through his brave actions he “displayed the highest levels of selflessness and courage…giving his life for freedom and defending his fellow Marines.” The public is welcome to attend the dedication ceremony to honor the life and sacrifice of Lance Corporal Alexander Scott Arredondo, USMC |
