SAN JUAN — Postal employees are providing mail and postal retail services for customers across Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands as inbound mail from the mainland continues to be transported and processed in the Caribbean.

If an office is damaged, postal officials are designating nearby locations for all customers to receive mail. In some cases in both Puerto Rice and the US Virgin Islands, letter carriers have even begun delivery where safe.

“We understand our role in restoring communications, continuity and commerce with mail. We are moving mail into the impacted areas as safely and expediently as possible,” said Edward Phelan, Area Vice President of Operations for the Northeast Area with administrative oversight over the Caribbean District. “Our employees are eager to deliver as they, themselves, recover from this storm. I am very proud of the efforts they are making as we focus on their safety and your service.”

Phelan added that additional instructions will be provided to mainland post offices to help answer questions on mailing to Puerto Rico or the US Virgin Islands.

Mailers are reminded to use complete addresses. Packages, including fragile items, should must be prepared to withstand normal mail processing and transportation. This should include sturdy containers, adequate cushioning and a mailing or strapping tape, not duct tape or masking tape.
