The entire senior class of Portland’s Casco Bay High School (CBHS) will march down Congress Street from the Portland Museum of Art to the Downtown Station post office on Congress Street tomorrow, December 13 at 1 p.m. to mail college applications.

The parade will include a police escort, music, roller-skaters and TD Bank’s WOW! van.  Downtown workers and other community members are encouraged to line the streets and cheer for the students.

At about 1:45 p.m., the CBHS students will gather at Portland City Hall for a celebration.

CBHS is joining other Expeditionary Learning high schools throughout the country in holding events on December 13 to honor seniors’ perseverance in seeking postsecondary opportunities.  Students who already submitted applications online will mail a follow-up postcard to a top choice school, an updated transcript or a letter to a significant adult in their lives who has given them support. A post office clerk will collect the letters outside the Congress Street Post Office.

A self-supporting government enterprise, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that reaches every address in the nation: 152 million residences, businesses and Post Office Boxes. The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations. With more than 31,000 retail locations and the most frequently visited website in the federal government, usps.com, the Postal Service has annual revenue of more than $65 billion and delivers nearly 40 percent of the world's mail. If it were a private-sector company, the U.S. Postal Service would rank 42nd in the 2012 Fortune 500. The Postal Service has been named the Most Trusted Government Agency for seven years and the fourth Most Trusted Business in the nation by the Ponemon Institute.
