WHAT:

The Postal Service expects to deliver a total of approximately 15.5 billion cards, letters, flats, and packages during the 2015 holiday season. In addition, they are projecting approximately 600 million packages will be delivered between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Eve, which is an increase of 10.5 percent over last year’s volume.

Here’s a great opportunity to capture b-roll and photos with an inside peek at how USPS utilizes high-tech equipment and systems to efficiently move so much mail every day.

This will be the only time media will have access into a Southeast Michigan area mail processing plant this holiday season.

Please enter by employee entrance at the front of the building. An employee will be at the doors for security check-in. For personal safety, no open-toe shoes or high heels may be worn in the facility. Please, no scarves or loose fitting clothing.

BACKGROUND

The Michigan Metroplex cancels all First-Class cards, letters, and flat mail collected from the entire Southeast Michigan area. The facility processes for delivery primarily cards, letters, and flat mail pieces.

During the holidays, from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Eve, the Postal Service will process an average of 536 million pieces of mail daily.

The Postal Service expects to process about 612 million pieces of mail on Monday, December 14, the busiest mailing day this year.

December 21 - The Postal Service anticipates that more than 30 million packages will be delivered on the peak delivery day alone.
