Background:
As part of Black History Month 2016, the U.S. Postal Service will commemorate the life and legacy of 39th Black Heritage Stamp honoree Richard Allen.

Activist, preacher and civic leader Richard Allen (1760-1831) was born into slavery, but purchased his freedom while in his twenties. This year’s Black Heritage Stamp coincides with the 200th anniversary of Allen's founding of the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church in Philadelphia, and his election and consecration as its first bishop.

The Bethel A.M.E. Church in Detroit is celebrating Founder’s Day with members throughout the State of Michigan attending.

The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.
