Tupelo — In a continuing effort to improve productivity and increase efficiency, the Postal Service plans to move its outgoing mail processing and distribution operations from the Tupelo Customer Service Mail Processing Center to the Memphis Processing and Distribution Center in Memphis, TN. The transition is expected to be completed by October 1, 2010. Retail services in Tupelo will remain unchanged.
Postal officials said local service will not be affected by the move. Some affected career employees may be reassigned to other vacant positions.
Mississippi District Manager Elizabeth Johnson said, “As is the case with the Postal Service as a whole, the Tupelo office has been experiencing a decline in mail volume and the Memphis Mail Processing & Distribution Center has underutilized capacity.”
“This consolidation will contribute toward the Postal Service’s goal of increasing efficiency and improving productivity,” said Johnson. “Optimizing our processing network like this will help the Postal Service remain viable to provide mail service for all Americans.”
Full retail and delivery services will not change and will continue to be provided. The Business Mail Entry Unit at Tupelo will remain open for large volume business mailers.
