FAYETTEVILLE, NC — On the busiest delivery day of the year, postal employees in Fayetteville had a special delivery of the own for children in the community. The American Postal Workers’ Union (APWU) Local #984 sponsored Angel Trees at several offices throughout the city, and employees purchased toys based on each child’s requests.
Once again, local APWU vice president Lillie Ford spearheaded the annual event and was pleased with this year’s efforts. “The employees really responded this year. This is my favorite thing to do because we’re able to give back to families in need,” said Ford. Local president Tony McKinnon agreed. “It’s our way of supporting a community that is so supportive of our workers.”
Representatives from the Department of Social Services picked up the special delivery, and they thanked everyone involved. Social worker Sandra Robinson said the gifts will touch the lives of many families. “What you all do means so much to so many. It’s a blessing.”
Postmaster Charles “Skip” Miller says this kind of generosity is only an example of what postal employees do all year. “Our employees enjoy serving the community. They do a lot that goes unrecognized, but I’m constantly amazed at their kindness and giving s pirit.”
Donations to the Angel Tree can still be made to the Social Services office until Dec 22.

A self-supporting government enterprise, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that reaches every address in the nation, 150 million residences, businesses and Post Office Boxes. The Postal Service receives no tax dollars. With 36,000 retail locations and the most frequently visited website in the federal government, the Postal Service relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses. Named the Most Trusted Government Agency five consecutive years and the sixth Most Trusted Business in the nation by the Ponemon Institute, the Postal Service has annual revenue of more than $68 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail. If it were a private sector company, the U.S. Postal Service would rank 26th in the 2008 Fortune 500.
