Release No.  102-10

Scouting stampTURNERSBURG, NC —This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America, and the Turnersburg Post Office will honor the centennial with a special commemorative postmark on Friday, July 30, 2010, from 9 am – 4 pm in its lobby at 2223 Turnersburg Hwy. The postmark event is held in conjunction with the issuance of the new Scouting stamp, due to be issued nationally on July 27.

The postmark is a hand canceled, collectible item good for one day only. Customers wishing to send mail, including cards and letters, bearing this postmark can bring items to be mailed to the Post Office that day. All items being postmarked must bear the correct postage. In addition, the postmark is available as a keepsake on your own envelope, postcard or other mailable item; customers will bring the item to the Post Office counter for “hand back service”.

David Smith, artist and creator of the special postmark, will be on site with examples of centennial postmarks used in other cities. Those unable to make it to Turnersburg on July 30th can still acquire a postmark within a 30 day grace period by mailing an envelope with correct postage and a self-addressed, stamp envelope to Scouting Centennial Station, Postmaster, PO Box 9998, Turnersburg, NC 28688.

Since the creation of the international youth scouting movement, hundreds of millions of children have benefited from opportunities for adventure, skill building, leadership, personal development and community service provided by scouting organizations. These groups offer young people communities in which they can learn collaboratively and have fun in partnership with adults.

A self-supporting government enterprise, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that reaches every address in the nation, 150 million residences, businesses and Post Office Boxes. The Postal Service receives no direct support from taxpayers. With 36,000 retail locations and the most frequently visited website in the federal government, the Postal Service relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses. Named the Most Trusted Government Agency five consecutive years and the sixth Most Trusted Business in the nation by the Ponemon Institute, the Postal Service has annual revenue of more than $68 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail. If it were a private sector company, the U.S. Postal Service would rank 28th in the 2009 Fortune 500.
