New Wilson Postmaster introduced on Tuesday

Local native Bassa to get "dunked" after employees raised $ for charity

Release No. 105-10

WILSON, NC — The new Postmaster of Wilson is getting officially welcomed to her position by getting “dunked” by her employees on Tuesday morning.

That’s because Wilson native Alisa Bassa, a Beddingfield High graduate and U.S. Army veteran who served in Desert Storm, is making good on a promise she made to her employees when she first arrived: if they contribute at least $3500 to a federally-sponsored charity drive, she would volunteer to sit in the target seat on a “dunk tank” in appreciation. The postal employees at the Wilson Post Office pledged more than $5000 for the Combined Federal Campaign, which collects contributions for more than 2000 local, national and international charities

“The employees work hard enough each day to serve the great citizens of this city,” said Bassa. “It’s a small thing for me to do in appreciation of their efforts, both for their daily duties as well as for their philanthropy.” The water tank will be set up in the Post Office parking lot at 501 Mercer Street SW, and employees will get their opportunities to “sink” the Postmaster beginning at 8:30 a.m., prior to mail going out for delivery.

Bassa is a 15-year postal employee who started her career as a letter carrier in Greenville. In 2005 she completed the Associate Supervisor Program and was promoted to supervisor, distribution operations at the Rocky Mount Processing Center. She eventually moved back to Greenville P.O. as a supervisor, customer services and later served as manager of the station. Last year she was named Officer-in-Charge of Wilson Post Office, her last assignment prior to her current position.

A Wilson resident, Bassa oversees 72 employees who are responsible for delivering more than 105,000 pieces of mail daily, going to 41 routes and 1783 Post Office boxes. The retail hours at the main office are 8:30 am – 5 pm weekdays, 9 am – 12 noon Saturdays; she also oversees four other Post Offices in Wilson: Barton College, 400 Atlantic Christian College Drive, open M-F 9 am – 12 noon and 1 – 4:30 pm; Brentwood, 2801 Ward Blvd, open M-F 9 am – 4 pm and Saturdays 9 am – 1 pm; Parkwood, 14790 Tarboro Street W, Open M-F 9 am – 5 pm; and Woodard, 1318 Nash Street SE, open M-F 8:30 am – 5 pm.

A self-supporting government enterprise, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that reaches every address in the nation, 150 million residences, businesses and Post Office Boxes. The Postal Service receives no direct support from taxpayers. With 36,000 retail locations and the most frequently visited website in the federal government, the Postal Service relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses. Named the Most Trusted Government Agency five consecutive years and the sixth Most Trusted Business in the nation by the Ponemon Institute, the Postal Service has annual revenue of more than $68 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail. If it were a private sector company, the U.S. Postal Service would rank 28th in the 2009 Fortune 500.
