James Hammock and Michael Smith display the Million Mile Awards recently presented to them by District Manager Dave Fields
FAYETTEVILLE, NC — Hope Mills Post Office recently recognized two carriers for achieving a milestone that places them in an elite group. City carrier James Hammock and rural carrier Michael Smith received the Million Mile Award from the National Safety Council and the US Postal Service. The Million Mile award signifies one million miles or thirty years of driving with no preventable accidents.
Both Hammock and Smith received a plaque and a safe driver pin from Mid-Carolinas District Manager David C. Fields. The Mid-Carolinas District covers the southern half of NC and the northern portion of SC just south of Charlotte and it serves customers in ZIP Codes beginning with the first three digits of 280-285, 287-289 and 297.
Fields says the district has more than 5,000 employees driving every day; yet, Hammock and Smith bring the total to only 20 Million Mile recipients this year. “The Million Mile award is a testament to your dedication to safety and to serving our customers. We appreciate what you do for us everyday,” Fields told the carriers.
Postmaster Mark Eline nominated the carriers for the award.

A self-supporting government enterprise, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that reaches every address in the nation, 150 million residences, businesses and Post Office Boxes. The Postal Service receives no direct support from taxpayers. With 36,000 retail locations and the most frequently visited website in the federal government, the Postal Service relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses. Named the Most Trusted Government Agency five consecutive years and the sixth Most Trusted Business in the nation by the Ponemon Institute, the Postal Service has annual revenue of more than $68 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail. If it were a private sector company, the U.S. Postal Service would rank 28th in the 2009 Fortune 500.
