THIS IS WHAT “BROWNS SUMMIT” CAN DO FOR YOU: From left to right, rural carrier Joe Hopkins, Postmaster Michael Payne, and sales and service associate Kenneth Tatum, all from Browns Summit, were recognized for their excellence in customer service.
BROWNS SUMMIT, NC — For millions of customers, the effect Postal Service employees have on them can last long after the customers see them on a regular basis. Ed Boelte, a resident of Surf City, NC, provided a perfect example recently.
Boelte, a criminal justice research professional, lived and worked in Browns Summit for many years prior to relocating to the eastern part of the state. His appreciation for the staff at the Post Office he left behind was made clear in a letter he recently sent to Postmaster General Jack Potter where he sang their praises, particularly those of three individuals.
“Service provided to me for many years has been of high quality and always with a positive customer service attitude,” Boelte wrote. “I am deeply grateful for mail service so vital to me and my colleagues, family and friends. Even in the era of electronic mail and other technological advances, the U.S. Postal Service is important and critical in some of my activities.”
Boelte singled out Postmaster Mike Payne, SSA Kenneth Tatum and Rural Carrier Joe Hopkins for his sincere appreciation of their “friendly attitude, excellent service and positive contributions.” Margaret Fox, Acting Post Office Operations Manager, Area 3, presented each with Awards of Excellence and token gifts, stating in front of their peers, “We make an impression on customers every day, and sometimes they aren’t always good ones. To be recognized in this way is a testament to each of your abilities, skills and commitment to this organization. I echo Mr. Boelte’s praises to you.”

A self-supporting government enterprise, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that reaches every address in the nation, 150 million residences, businesses and Post Office Boxes. The Postal Service receives no direct support from taxpayers. With 36,000 retail locations and the most frequently visited website in the federal government, the Postal Service relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses. Named the Most Trusted Government Agency five consecutive years and the sixth Most Trusted Business in the nation by the Ponemon Institute, the Postal Service has annual revenue of more than $68 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail. If it were a private sector company, the U.S. Postal Service would rank 28th in the 2009 Fortune 500.
