CHARLOTTE, NC — Postal carriers in Concord NC celebrated a fellow carrier recently when Danny Gray, of North 29 Station received the Million Mile Award from the U.S. Postal Service and the National Safety Council. The award represents more than 30 years or one million miles without a preventable accident.

District Manager David C. Fields presented Gray with the plaque and service pin, congratulating the carrier for “induction into the club. This award places you in an elite group, and it’s an honor to present it to you,” said Fields. Concord Postmaster Anthony Spriggs says Gray isn’t just conscientious about safety, he is diligent in every aspect of his job.

Gray’s coworkers seem to agree because they had a special presentation of their own for the 32 –year postal veteran. Gray received a pair of bronzed boots mounted to a plaque with the inscription, “Seems like a million.” The boots reference Gray’s early days on the job when he had a walking route that covered quite a distance.

Gray said he was humbled by the award and that Fields took time to present it to him personally.

A self-supporting government enterprise, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that reaches every address in the nation, 150 million residences, businesses and Post Office Boxes. The Postal Service receives no direct support from taxpayers. With 36,000 retail locations and the most frequently visited website in the federal government, the Postal Service relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses. Named the Most Trusted Government Agency five consecutive years and the sixth Most Trusted Business in the nation by the Ponemon Institute, the Postal Service has annual revenue of more than $68 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail. If it were a private sector company, the U.S. Postal Service would rank 28th in the 2009 Fortune 500.
