WILLIAMSTON, NC — A letter carrier from Williamston was honored this week after having joined the ranks of the prestigious Million Mile Club, the highest honor given to professional drivers in the workplace.

Rural letter carrier Jo Ann Parnell was recognized at the Williamston Post Office as the latest inductee into the “Million Mile Club.”

Williamston Office-in-Charge Rosa Whitehead and Post Office Operations Manager Julius Jones recognized Parnell for her ability to drive regularly for the Postal Service for at least 30 years – which translates to at least one million miles – without incurring a preventable motor vehicle accident. The award is given by the National Safety Council.

“The Postal Service is proud of Ms. Parnell’s accomplishments and our community should likewise be proud of the safety record she brings,” said Whitehead.

According to the NSC, the status is to professional driving as reaching the peak of Mt. Everest is to the sport of climbing.

Mrs. Parnell resides in Bear Grass with her husband Mr. James Parnell. She has a daughter, Jennifer Heaph, and son, Chip Parnell along with three grandchildren.
