Cary postal carrier reaches the top

Postmaster to honor “million mile” employee June 1

CARY, NC – A letter carrier from Cary will be honored Wednesday after having joined the ranks of the prestigious Million Mile Club, the highest honor given to professional drivers in the workplace.

On Wednesday, June 1 at 9 am, Marlon Morgan, a 34-year postal veteran and resident of New Hill, will be recognized at the Cary Post Office, 150 Wrenn Drive, as the latest inductee into the Million Mile Club.

Morgan, who now serves as mail collector, started his postal career in Sunnyvale, CA after a 5 ½ year stint in the U.S. Army. He soon transferred to Durham, and in 1985, he transferred to Cary. In addition to carrying mail, often in the Kildaire Farms area of Cary, Morgan has also served as a Vehicle Operations Maintenance Assistant (VOMA), a certified postal driver instructor/examiner, and a lobby director for the Post Office’s retail operation.

“To be a safe driver, my advice is to not ever become complacent on the road,” said Morgan.

Cary Officer-in-Charge Mike Westbrook and District Manager Russ Gardner will recognize Morgan for his ability to drive regularly for the Postal Service for at least 30 years – which translates to at least one million miles – without incurring a preventable motor vehicle accident. The award is given by the National Safety Council. According to the NSC, the status is to professional driving as reaching the peak of Mt. Everest is to the sport of climbing.

“The Postal Service is proud of Mr. Morgan’s accomplishments and our community should likewise be proud of the safety record he brings,” said Westbrook.
