Million Miler Lonnie 'Eddie' Johnson and Manager Chris Spann

Selma, NC — Lonnie “Eddie” Johnson (left), a rural letter carrier at Selma Post Office and local resident, was recently recognized for joining the ranks of the prestigious Million Mile Club, the highest honor given to professional drivers in the workplace. Johnson was presented the award by Area 2 Post Office Operations Manager Chris Spann for driving one million miles or 30 years without a preventable motor vehicle accident. He has been on Rural Route 3, which covers Micro and northeastern rural Selma, for 23 years, and joined the Postal Service in 1982 as a rural carrier associate. The Million Mile award is given by the National Safety Council, which declares the status is to professional driving as reaching the peak of Mt. Everest is to the sport of climbing. It is Johnson’s second such award; he was also given the same award by Pope Transport, with whom he worked for years on a part-time basis. He is also a deacon at the Divine Crossing Baptist Church in Selma. “The U.S. Postal Service has been very fortunate to have a carrier of Eddie’s dedication and conscientiousness,” said Judy Pate, Acting Postmaster, Selma.

The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.
