DOBSON — Two letter carriers from Dobson Post Office were recognized Thursday for achieving two of the highest honors bestowed upon federal employees.
Local resident Terry Cook, a 39 year postal veteran, received the 2014 U.S. Postal Service Joseph M. Kaplan Safe Driver of the Year Award. Cook was selected from more than 20,000 letter carriers in the Capital Metro Area, which covers postal facilities in eight districts and in five states and the District of Columbia. He was recognized for going his entire career without incurring a preventable motor vehicle accident.
Cook and fellow carrier Tim Caudle both were inducted into the Million Mile Club, which recognizes employees in all industries for driving at least 30 years in the workplace without a preventable motor vehicle accident. Both awards are given by the National Safety Council.
On hand to present the awards were Acting District Manager Ronnie White, Postmaster Michael Rosenhauer, Area 4 Post Office Operations Manager Steve Hobbs and Acting Human Resources Manager Kesha Holifield. “Driving one million miles without an accident puts you in a select group,” said White. “It is the equivalent of driving coast to coast 334 times or driving around the world 40 times or two trips to the moon and back. It’s a remarkable achievement.”
Cook will travel to San Diego next month to participate in the National Safety Council’s Annual Awards Ceremony as a nominee for the national award. “I’m always looking out for other drivers, and if they want to go fast or pass me, I sit there and let them do it,” he said. “It’s much safer that way.”
Caudle, also a local resident and an employee of 34 years, said, “I’ve always followed instructions and all the safety rules, but it’s through the grace and mercy of God that I’ve avoided accidents all these years.”
The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.# # #
