SUNBURY, NC — Gates County residents are invited to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Sunbury Post Office located at 990 U.S. Highway 158 East.
Postmaster Winston Hobbs will host a customer appreciation event on Friday, Feb. 12 from 9 a.m. to noon and 1-4 p.m. to celebrate the establishment of the historic Sunbury Post Office. The Sunbury Post Office was established 200 years ago on Feb. 12, 1816. Previously called the “Sunsbury” Post Office, George G. G. Gray served as the first Postmaster. In March, 1828, the name was officially changed to “Sunbury” Post Office under Postmaster Jesse Cox.
The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.
