SIOUX CITY, IA — The U.S. Postal Service will hold a public meeting to discuss its proposal to move some mail processing operations from the Sioux City Processing and Distribution Facility (P&DF) into the Sioux Falls, SD Processing and Distribution Center (P&DC).
The meeting will take place from 7 p.m. – 9 p.m. on Tuesday, April 26 at the Sioux City Convention Center, Gallery A, located at 801 4th St.
With the deep decline in mail volume due to current economic conditions and continuing electronic diversion, the Postal Service has an excess of employees and equipment in some mail processing operations. A study was begun last month at the Sioux City P&DF to determine the feasibility of consolidating redundant operations to see if any efficiencies and cost savings would be achieved.
Initial study results support consolidating some mail processing operations that are currently being performed at the Sioux City P&DF by taking advantage of available processing capacity at the Sioux Falls, SD P&DC in order to increase efficiency and improve productivity.
While no final decision has been reached, Postal Service managers will give an overview of the reasons for the proposal and its possible outcomes, and will listen to community input and concerns. A summary of the proposal and presentation materials will be made available on usps.com one week before the meeting date.

AREA MAIL PROCESSING (AMP) FEASIBILITY STUDY SUMMARY BRIEF
Sioux City, IA P&DF to Sioux Falls, SD P&DC
April 11, 2011
Area Mail Processing (AMP) is the consolidation of mail processing operations from one or more postal facilities to other facilities to improve operational efficiency and/or service.
An AMP study was initiated to evaluate the transfer of mail processing from the Sioux City, IA Processing and Distribution Facility (P&DF) to the Sioux Falls, SD Processing and Distribution Center (P&DC). The initial results of the study support the business case for consolidation. This study, currently in review at United States Postal Service Headquarters and its Area Office is subject to change.
A public meeting will be held to share the initial results of the study and allow members of the community to ask questions and provide feedback. The public’s input will be considered prior to a final decision.
Below are preliminary highlights from the study:
1. Business Case:
Proposed annual savings in the draft AMP feasibility study are approximately $2.8 Million.
2. Postal Employees:
Due to the consolidation, a net decrease of approximately 28 positions is projected. All reassignments will be made in accordance with collective bargaining agreements.
3. Local Customer Considerations:
The Sioux City P&DF does not contain a retail unit. The Sioux City Main Post Office is located approximately two miles from the Sioux City P&DF. Services that are currently available from the Main Post Office will continue to be available to customers.
- Collection box pick-up times will not change as a result of the AMP.
- Retail services will not change as a result of the AMP.
- Business mail acceptance will remain the same.
- A local postmark will be available for stamped First-Class Mail.
- Delivery of mail to residences and businesses will not change as a result of the AMP.
4. Commercial Mailers:
- Mailers who presort mail will continue to receive appropriate postage discounts
