OMAHA, NE — Even Santa would likely be impressed. Nebraska Postal carriers are expecting to deliver hundreds of thousands of packages on Monday, Dec. 21 – the busiest delivery day of the year. The Postal Service anticipates more than 30 million packages will be delivered nationwide on the peak delivery day alone.

Nearly 600 million packages are forecast to be delivered nationwide between Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve – a record 2.6 million in Nebraska.

Every available carrier and vehicle, including rentals, will be called into service to ensure all cards and packages are delivered on-time this holiday season. For weeks now, Nebraska postal carriers have been delivering packages 7-days a week in all larger cities, and smaller cities where volumes merit.

“It’s all about providing outstanding service to our customers and keeping our package network fluid,” said Omaha Postmaster Keith Reid, who added the USPS has been investing in its infrastructure including high-speed package-sorting equipment, and scanning technology to provide real-time visibility of packages.

In time for the holidays, the Postal Service offers real-time delivery notifications – meaning customers who sign up for alerts at myusps.com will receive text and/or email notification within a few minutes of the delivery scan for select packages.

For those who have yet to get those cards and presents in the mail, it’s not too late, says Reid, who shares the following mail-by dates and convenient options for mailing and shipping.

Using Click-N-Ship, customers can print shipping labels for postage and request a Free Package Pickup. The popular Priority Mail Flat Rate Holiday Boxes virtually eliminate the need to weigh packages.

  • Self Service Kiosks – Located in the lobbies of select Post Office lobbies in the state, these easy to use machines allow customers to purchase stamps, and weigh and ship packages 24/7 using their debit or credit cards. Call 1-800-ASK-USPS (1-800-275-8777) or go to usps.com and click on “Find USPS Locations” to find the nearest Self Service Kiosk and/or postal location.

Between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Eve, the USPS will handle 15.5 billion pieces of mail – 541 million a day – which will be delivered to more than 150 million U.S. addresses with the help of nearly 200,000 vehicles. Approximately 30,000 seasonal workers have been hired to process and deliver holiday cards and packages.

The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.
