The President of the United States signed Public Law 111-189 on June 9, 2010 to dedicate the Westwood NJ Post Office in honor of fallen Marine Sergeant Christopher R. Hrbek. The 25 year old marine was killed in January 2010 by an improvised explosive device in Helmand Province in Afghanistan.

A special pictorial cancellation is being offered in Westwood by the USPS to commemorate the municipality’s proclamation of Nov 27 as Christopher Hrbek Day.

Sergeant Hrbek was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star for valor for braving enemy fire to save the life of his battalion sergeant major who had stepped on an improvised explosive device in December 2009. Hrbek was a graduate of Westwood High School and a volunteer firefighter for nine years in the Borough.

Public law 111-189 designates the facility of the United States Postal Service at 216 Westwood Avenue in Westwood, New Jersey, as the “Sergeant Christopher R. Hrbek Post Office Building.” The House of Representatives version of the bill, H.R. 4628, was sponsored NJ Congressman Scott Garrett with the twelve other NJ Representatives as Co-Sponsors. The Senate version, S. 3013, was sponsored by Senator Frank Lautenberg and Senator Bob Menendez.

A self-supporting government enterprise, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that reaches every address in the nation, 150 million residences, businesses and Post Office Boxes. The Postal Service receives no direct support from taxpayers. With 36,000 retail locations and the most frequently visited website in the federal government, the Postal Service relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses. Named the Most Trusted Government Agency five consecutive years and the sixth Most Trusted Business in the nation by the Ponemon Institute, the Postal Service has annual revenue of more than $68 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail. If it were a private sector company, the U.S. Postal Service would rank 28th in the 2009 Fortune 500.
