President Barack Obama signed Public Law 112-83 on January 3, 2012 to dedicate the Little Ferry NJ Post Office at 20 Main Street in honor of fallen Marine Sergeant Matthew Fenton. (http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/PLAW-112publ83/pdf/PLAW-112publ83.pdf).

Sergeant Fenton died of injuries suffered while fighting in Iraq in April 2006. The 24 year old marine from Little Ferry was hit by shrapnel while trying to stop a suicide car bomber from ramming a military convoy in Al Anbar province. His comrades all escaped serious injury, but Fenton died from head wounds nine days later at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. Congressman Steve Rothman sponsored the bill, which was co-sponsored by the entire congressional delegation. Congressman Rothman called Fenton a "true American hero."

Fenton had wanted to become a police officer after his service, and the Little Ferry Police Department made him a member posthumously. His retired badge, No. 44, was presented to his mother, and his name is on a police officers memorial.

A statue honoring Fenton was erected outside Memorial School in Little Ferry.
