On a frigid January 30, Long Valley NJ Rural Carrier Eric Fichter discovered an injured senior citizen who had fallen from his mobility scooter onto a local roadway. The badly injured 88 year old Long Valley resident was bleeding and lying in a dangerous spot on the road. Fichter parked and quickly flagged down a truck driver for additional assistance. Together the rural carrier and the truck driver moved the incapacitated 88 year old to safety, called 911, and applied bandages. The Long Valley rural carrier stayed with the badly injured octogenarian till the police and EMS personnel arrived. EMS transported the Long Valley senior citizen to the hospital where he was treated for a puncture wound to the head, a severe laceration to his thumb, and missing skin from his forearm. “I want to commend your heroic actions and selfless display of civic duty,” wrote U.S. Postmaster General Patrick R. Donahoe in a letter of commendation to Mr. Fichter. “Your efforts remind us all of the ties that bind communities and our country together,” added the Postal Service’s CEO. “We are fortunate to have employees of your caliber represent this organization. Thank you and well done,” concluded the Postmaster General. Each year, postal employees go beyond the call of duty, some even risking their own safety to save the lives of the customers they serve. In 2013, the Postal Service recognized 262 employee heroes. |
