Raritan, NJ — Raritan Letter Carrier Glenda Mix was recognized by senior postal managers at a special ceremony at the Raritan Post Office Post Office on September 30. Ms. Mix was presented a special award by USPS Northern New Jersey District Manager Steven Hernandez for helping save the life of a Raritan resident on April 23.  USPS Northern New Jersey District Post Office Operations Manager Michael Rizzolo and Acting Raritan Postmaster Cynthia Weiss were also on hand to honor the carrier for her heroic actions.

While delivering mail on her carrier route in Raritan, Mix came to the aid of a Thompson Street resident who was slumped over the steering wheel of her car. The Raritan carrier tried to awaken the woman; but without success.  Ms. Mix quickly called 911 and remained with the unconscious resident until the Raritan Rescue Squad arrived.  After the resident was taken to the hospital, Mix completed her route and returned to the woman’s home to check on her condition.

“I was happy to find her and get her the help she needed,” emphasized Mix.

Because of Mix’s attentiveness, the situation had a positive outcome. The Thompson Street resident eventually returned home after extensive medical treatment at the hospital. First responders credited the Raritan letter carrier with saving the woman’s life.

“My family and I are just so grateful to her (Mix) for saving my life,” the Thompson Street resident told a local reporter. “And I am so grateful to the rescue squad too.”

“The good reputation the Postal Service enjoys is built on the service and dedication of employees like yourself,” emphasized Northern New Jersey District Manager Hernandez at the Post Office ceremony. “Thank you for going above and beyond the call of duty,” he concluded.

Ms. Mix also received a congratulatory letter and Hero Award from United States Postmaster General Patrick R. Donahoe. The Postmaster General wrote: “I want to commend your selfless display of civic duty. You deserve the highest level of admiration for coming to the aid of a woman whom you found slumped over the steering wheel of her car.”

Ms. Mix’s life-saving efforts are reflective of how postal employees make a difference in the communities where they work and live. Each year, postal employees go beyond the call of duty to save the lives of the customers they serve. In 2013, the Postal Service recognized 262 employee heroes.
