Postal and municipal officials will pay tribute to Letter Carrier, volunteer fireman, and local resident Ed Majowicz at a brief presentation in front of the Carlstadt Post Office building that caught fire on April 24.

Ed Majowicz was sound asleep in his Carlstadt home when he was awakened in the early morning on Thursday, April 24 by a police department scanner. As a volunteer fireman, Majowicz responded to the three alarm fire at the Post Office building. In addition to helping to put out the fire on the second floor of the building, Majowicz moved all the postal vehicles out of harm’s way. He also put mail from inside the building into hampers and rolled them outside.

After the fire was extinguished, volunteer fireman Majowicz went home. But without much time for more than a shower, Letter Carrier Majowicz turned around and reported for work. Postal managers had already shifted operations to nearby East Rutherford. Majowicz and other Carlstadt carriers were able to deliver the day’s mail to the customers on their routes without missing a beat.

The Carlstadt Post Office, a branch of the Rutherford NJ Main Post Office, remains under an emergency suspension due to the fire damage. Postal officials continue to consider all options for the leased facility with the primary intent of returning to the existing building
