Montclair NJ — The Greater New Jersey Postal Customer Council held their spring meeting at Montclair State University on Friday, March 24. Over 50 industry leaders and senor postal managers gathered at the Center for Environmental and Life Sciences building to discuss innovations and the future of the mailing industry.

Composed of industry professionals and senior postal managers, PCCs meet regularly to exchange mutually beneficial ideas.  Postal Customer Councils (PCCs) across the nation serve as effective platforms and open forums for ongoing dialogue.

The impact of the mailing industry on the national and State economies is significant. According to an industry study, the U.S. mailing industry provides 7.5 million jobs and $1.4 trillion in sales revenue. That translates to 260,497 jobs and $32.323 billion in sales revenue in the State of New Jersey.

In addition to a welcome from Montclair State’s Facilities VP Shawn Connolly and Mail Director Lavon Broxton, the meeting’s speakers included: Greater NJ PCC Industry Co-Chair Lauran Solvik from the Millennium Group, Newark NJ Postmaster Carmen Fede, U.S. Postal Service New Product Implementation Manager Tiffany Jesse, EarthColor Marketing Solutions President Cheryl Kahanec, Postal Service Sales Manager John Hagan, and Postal Service Sales Specialist Gary Johnson.

Postal officials talked about the deployment of 4,300 high tech scanners in Northern New Jersey and the introduction of new products and services like Informed Delivery. This new notification service gives consumers the ability to see a daily preview of letter-sized mailpieces that will be arriving in their mailboxes soon. This optional, free feature allows users to view grayscale images of the outside of their letter-sized mailpieces on a computer or mobile device. EarthColor President Cheryl highlighted the innovations in digital print and mailing in 2017.

A common theme in many of the presentations at the Greater New Jersey PCC meeting was that technology will play an integral role in the future of the mailing industry. A vivid example of the excitement mail can create is featured in the Postal Service’s Irresistible Mail book and website. Irresistible Mail demonstrates the use of dynamic engagement applications like enhanced segmented reality, video in print, textures, inks, and special papers.
