Postmaster Sparano, who grew up in Fairfield and graduated from West Essex High School, is responsible for managing a dedicated workforce of 95 employees at 3 postal facilities providing mail delivery, distribution, postal retail, and customer services in Caldwell, West Caldwell, North Caldwell, Fairfield plus delivery to Essex Fells.

Postmaster Sparano will recite the oath of office that reflects the Postal Service’s 242 year legacy of public service. The U.S. Postal Service traces its roots to 1775 during the Second Continental Congress, when Benjamin Franklin was appointed the first postmaster general. The Post Office Department was created in 1792 from Franklin's operation, elevated to a cabinet-level department in 1872, and transformed in 1971 into the U.S. Postal Service as an independent agency.

In the more than two centuries since Benjamin Franklin was appointed the first Postmaster General in 1775, the Postal Service has grown and changed with America, boldly embracing new technologies to better serve a growing population. Once political appointments, today’s Postmaster vacancies are filled through a competitive procedure.

The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.
