PIE TOWN, NM — Postal Service officials have announced operations at the Pie Town Post Office will be temporarily suspended because of safety concerns with the building. The landlord has informed the Postal Service it will not make the repairs and has opted to end the lease.

Beginning Saturday, April 28, 2018, all operations at the Pie Town Post Office will be temporarily moved to the Datil Post Office at 101 W. Highway 60, until such time as a new location can be identified for the Pie Town Post Office. Official notifications regarding the change have been mailed to all Pie Town customers.

Mail delivery will continue uninterrupted to the Pie Town area. The Postal Service will temporarily install centralized mailboxes in Pie Town to make it easier for Post Office Box customers to pick up their mail. Rural route customers will continue to receive regular mail delivery. The blue collection box in Pie Town will continue to be picked up as scheduled.

Until the centralized mailboxes are installed, Post Office Box customers will need to pick up their mail at the Datil Post Office. Customers are reminded to bring photo identification when doing so. The Datil Post Office is open 6:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., and 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. on Saturdays. The phone number at the Datil Post Office is 575-772-5551.

It’s important to note that USPS customers don’t have to visit a Post Office to conduct most transactions. Customers may buy stamps and ship packages through their rural carrier, also known as a Post Office on Wheels. Customers may also order Stamps by Mail (available at Post Offices or ask your carrier for a form), Stamps by Phone, 1-800-STAMP-24 (800-782-6724), and the 24/7 online Post Office at usps.com, where they can purchase stamps, print postage-paid shipping labels and more.

“The safety of our employees and customers is paramount,” said USPS Post Office Operations Manager Paul Pantoja. “Rather than make the necessary structural repairs, the facility’s landlord opted to end the lease. As a result, we will temporarily suspend retail operations in Pie Town and move them to the Datil Post Office until such time as we can identify a new location for the Pie Town Post Office.

“The Postal Service plans to reopen the Pie Town Post Office in a new location,” Pantoja added. “We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause our customers, and we will keep them updated on any changes and progress.”

The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.
