Mailboxes Will Bulge in Huntington Station 11746 Today

December 22, 2010

December 22, 2010 — Postal officials predict it will be the busiest delivery day of the season across America.

But nobody will be as busy as they will be in Huntington Station, as ZIP Code 11746 has been identified as the nation’s busiest zip code.

The following chart documenting the mail volume for the full month of November, and volume of mail through December 10, shows that ZIP Code 11746 residential deliveries eclipsed other perennial full mailboxes in New York, Chicago and Staten Island. Even holiday favorites Garland and Sugarland fell behind in the race for the fullest mailboxes this year.

As Monday, Dec. 20, marked the Postal Service’s busiest mailing day of the year -- more than 800 million pieces of mail entering the system representing a 40 percent increase in the average daily volume – the 56 letter carriers will shortly be on the streets to provide delivery to approximately 20,000 deliveries in 11746.

A self-supporting government enterprise, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that reaches every address in the nation, 150 million residences, businesses and Post Office Boxes. The Postal Service receives no direct support from taxpayers. With 36,000 retail locations and the most frequently visited website in the federal government, the Postal Service relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses. Named the Most Trusted Government Agency five consecutive years and the sixth Most Trusted Business in the nation by the Ponemon Institute, the Postal Service has annual revenue of more than $68 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail. If it were a private sector company, the U.S. Postal Service would rank 28th in the 2009 Fortune 500.
