US Postal Service Observes Columbus Day

Long Island NY Post Offices Closed for the Holiday

October 02, 2011

LONG ISLAND NY – All Post Offices throughout Long Island will be closed on Monday, October 10, 2011, in observance of the Columbus Day federal holiday. There will be no regular mail delivery. Only Express Mail will be delivered on the Holiday. All Post Offices will re-open with regular mail delivery and collections resuming on Tuesday, October 11, 2011.

Customers requiring postal services over the Columbus Day holiday weekend can take advantage of the select 25 Post Office locations throughout Long Island NY that offer 24/7 access to Automated Postal Centers (APCs) in their lobbies. The 25 APCs on Long Island NY are listed below.
Using credit and debit cards, the APC enables customers to:

  • Buy self-adhesive stamps.
  • Weigh, calculate and purchase postage in amounts for items weighing up to 70 pounds.
  • Send items via Express, Priority, and First-Class Mail, as well as by Parcel Post.
  • Purchase insurance up to $500.
  • Look up ZIP Codes and obtain Postal Service mailing information.
  • Obtain Certified Mail, Delivery Confirmation and Return Receipts.
  • Obtain a receipt.

Keep in mind that there are also 70,000 non-postal locations to purchase postal products and services nationwide. Addresses for these grocery stores, drug stores and retailers can be found at www.uspseverywhere.com; check to see if they are open during the holiday. Postal customers are strongly encouraged to visit the Postal Service’s Web site at usps.com to acquire additional information regarding holiday closures or call 1-800-ASK-USPS (1-800-275-8777) for information.

A self-supporting government enterprise, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that reaches every address in the nation, 150 million residences, businesses and Post Office Boxes. The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses, and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations. With 32,000 retail locations and the most frequently visited website in the federal government, usps.com, the Postal Service has annual revenue of more than $67 billion and delivers nearly 40 percent of the world’s mail. If it were a private sector company, the U.S. Postal Service would rank 29th in the 2010 Fortune 500. Black Enterprise and Hispanic Business magazines ranked the Postal Service as a leader in workforce diversity. The Postal Service has been named the Most Trusted Government Agency six consecutive years and the sixth Most Trusted Business in the nation by the Ponemon Institute.
