WHAT: Glenville rural letter carrier Gary Hastings and city carrier Frank Fazio will be awarded the prestigious National Safety Council’s Million Mile Award for safe driving by Schenectady Postmaster John Reilly in a brief ceremony at the Glenville office on Wednesday.
WHY: The enormous achievement of daily driving, with years of spotless precision behind the wheel, is good news two times over for Gary, for Frank, for the Post Office and for Glenville,” added Postmaster Reilly. “It is also important to remember that level of attentiveness, out on our streets, as we approach this weekend’s 20th annual letter carrier food drive. Our carriers are such a part of the neighborhoods and this is two examples in one week that underscore this.”
WHERE: 6 Glenridge Rd., Glenville
WHEN: Wednesday, May 9 -- 8:30 am
BACKGROUND:

"Most people overlook the fact that among their many duties, postal employees are also professional drivers. They regularly face driving conditions that demand uninterrupted concentration," said the postmaster. "There is no room for a misdelivery of safety when you are behind the wheel of a postal vehicle," said Mr. Reilly.

According to the National Safety Council, the Million Miler awards are based on one million miles driven or 30 years without a preventable motor vehicle accident. It is the trademark of the expert driver and is recognized as the nation’s highest award for professional safe driving.

In its 20th year, the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive is the largest single-day food drive in the nation with a total of 1,130,000,000 pounds collected since the drive’s inception. Through the generosity of communities across America, letter carriers collected 70.2 million pounds in 2011.

Post cards promoting the food drive are being delivered by letter carriers to more than 90 million homes across the country this week as a reminder to participate in the drive
