On Monday, November 4 at 10:30am, New York’s Landmark Main Post Office at 421 8th Avenue, Manhattan, NY 10199 will host a commemorative ceremony in honor of Veterans. All veterans are welcome.  Ceremony will be held in the new Veterans Hall of Honor on the 33rd Street rotunda.  The event is free and open to the public and media.

This year’s ceremony pays tribute to Sergeant Onix Lugo, USPS Manager of Baychester Post Office in the Bronx – who was recently presented the States third highest award from Governor Cuomo for saving the lives of 500 civilians on Staten Island during the devastation from Hurricane Sandy.  Sergeant Lugo will be a speaker at the ceremony.

Also speaking will be Chief of Staff Derek Bennett with the (IAVA) Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America.  Congressman Jose Serrano will be keeping the tradition of being a keynote speaker at the special veterans’ ceremony.  Everyone is reminded of the IAVA sponsored parade on Veterans Day in Manhattan.
At the start of the ceremony will be a special flag presentation by the New York City Postal Inspection Service and Postal Police.  A memorial was commissioned and installed in Veteran’s Hall that graces the walkway for all New Yorkers - and visitors to New York City - to see and to remember.

USPS District Manager William Schnaars supports the annual ceremony saying, “During Veteran’s Day, we pay tribute to the men and women who defend the United States and the principles upon which America was founded.  Today we celebrate and remember our heroes.”

The ceremony speakers include, New York’s Postmaster William Brown who will be retiring at the end of November of this year, Bronx Postmaster Elvin Mercado, New York’s Manager of Transportation Vanessa Clark, and a special presentation will be performed by professional singer Lynn Watson- Miyamoto and additional guests who have confirmed their attendance.

“The James A. Farley Main Post Office Veterans Hall preserves the legacy of brave Americans, and upholds the founding principles that have built this great nation.  Our Veterans unwavering devotion inspires us all -- they are the best of America”, said Schnaars.

The ceremony is free and open to the public.
