COLD SPRING, NY — Postal officials will begin the relocation of operations from the existing Post Office into a temporary customer service trailer after the close of business on Saturday, January 25. The temporary trailer is handicapped accessible and located next to the existing Post Office at 51 Chestnut Street.

Regular operations and business hours will remain the same after a brief two-day transition.

On Monday, January 27 the Post Office Boxes will be in the temporary trailer and the retail / customer service operations will still be in the existing Post Office. On Tuesday, January 28 the retail / customer service operations will open at 9:30 a.m. in the trailer.

Throughout the relocation process, mail delivery will be unaffected. The same letter carriers will be delivering to the same routes in Cold Spring at approximately the same time each day. However, the carriers will begin their work day at the Garrison Post Office, approximately five minutes from Cold Spring on Route 9D.

The Post Office lease at the current location expires Jan. 31. The process of identifying a new permanent site for the Cold Spring Post Office will include: presentation of the plans by a postal official at a public meeting, advertising the solicitation for a new site, notices soliciting written public comment, and announcements to the media.

A self-supporting government enterprise, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that reaches every address in the nation: 152 million residences, businesses and Post Office Boxes. The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations. With more than 31,000 retail locations and the most frequently visited website in the federal government, usps.com, the Postal Service has annual revenue of more than $65 billion and delivers nearly 40 percent of the world’s mail. If it were a private-sector company, the U.S. Postal Service would rank 42nd in the 2012 Fortune 500. The Postal Service has been named the Most Trusted Government Agency for seven years and the fourth Most Trusted Business in the nation by the Ponemon Institute.
