Hudson, NY — Officials from the Hudson Post Office and the Olana Partnership are inviting the public to join a celebration on Aug. 21 for the nationwide release of four new Hudson River School Forever commemorative postage stamps. The Olana Partnership’s Director of Education Amy Hufnagel will be at the Hudson Post Office at 402 Union Street from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. to encourage the art of letter writing by offering the public an opportunity to write a free postcard with a free Hudson River School Forever stamp, courtesy of the Olana Partnership. Postal officials will then apply a commemorative postmark to create a historic keepsake to mark the first day of sale of the four new Hudson River School Forever stamps.

The four new stamps feature details of paintings by four renowned artists of the Hudson River School. Inspired by the stunning natural beauty of New York state, this loose-knit school of painters flourished from the mid-1830s to the mid-1870s and gave America its first major school of art. The paintings on these stamps are: Distant View of Niagara Falls by Thomas Cole (1801–1848); Summer Afternoon by Asher B. Durand (1796–1886); Sunset by Frederic Edwin Church (1826–1900); and Grand Canyon by Thomas Moran (1837–1926). t

Located in Hudson, NY, Olana was the home of Hudson River School artist Frederic Edwin Church. Olana was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1965. It is owned and operated by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, and is also supported by The Olana Partnership, a non-profit 501(c) organization. See http://www.olana.org for extensive information about Olana.
