Monday, Dec. 15, will mark the Postal Service’s busiest mailing day of the year with more than 640 million cards, letters and packages expected to be processed.  Meet with local postal officials to discuss the final countdown for Capital Region mailers, including:

  • How much mail will we see in Albany and the surrounding area?  Last year on the peak mailing day, the Albany Processing Center applied 1,618,490 postmarks on stamped envelopes, like cards!   Nationwide, the Postal Service expects more than 640 million pieces of mail to process.
  • How is that package volume?  During Holiday 2013, the Postal Service delivered 434 million packages across the nation. We are looking at about 16% growth in packages, this year, and will likely deliver in the range of 450 to 470 million packages.
    • On Sunday, Dec. 7, the Postal Service delivered 3.2 million packages nationwide. We should know how many packages we delivered across the country on Dec.14 by Monday.
  • Recommended mailing dates:  Dec. 20 is the deadline to send greeting cards, packages and letters to ensure delivery in time for Christmas. For the last-minute shoppers, Dec. 23 is the deadline for sending packages using Priority Mail Express.
  • High tech improvements:  Dec. 15th is projected to be the busiest day this holiday season for usps.com with nearly 7 million visits to the site as a whole, an 11% increase over last year
    • Dec 15th is also projected to be the busiest day for Click-N-Ship with close to 500,000 shipping labels printed.
