What: |
Show your support! Bring a can, and join the thousands already participating in the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) week long food drive in Manhattan and the Bronx. Every post office throughout both NYC boroughs has a food donation drop off bin in the lobby. Customers are encouraged to drop off a sturdy bag of non-perishable food items to help combat hunger. At the culmination of the drive on May 10, carriers will handle with care and deliver all collected food to City Harvest for redistribution to food pantries. The media and public are invited to attend a special conference to help strengthen the broadcast of the national food drive and to provide valuable information about the critical need there is for food provisions in the Big Apple. |

Background: |
Now through Saturday, May 10, Manhattan and Bronx letter carriers, the USPS, political leaders and the community are joining together to make this, the 22nd anniversary of the National Association of Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive the best year yet to help restock food pantry shelves. Currently, 49 million Americans—1 in 6—are unsure where their next meal is coming from. Sixteen million are children who feel hunger’s impact on their overall health and ability to perform in school. And nearly 5 million seniors over age 60 are food insecure, with many who live on fixed incomes often too embarrassed to ask for help. In 2013, 74 million pounds of food was collected by Postal carriers nationally, feeding an estimated 30 million people. Over the course of the 21-year history, the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive has collected well over one billion pounds of food. The food drive’s timing is crucial. Food banks and pantries often receive the majority of their donations during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday seasons. By springtime, many pantries are depleted, entering the summer low on supplies at a time when many school breakfast and lunch programs are not available to children in need. How the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive Works Just drop off a non-perishable food donation in a bag at any post office in Manhattan and the Bronx now through Saturday, May 10, and the Postal carriers will do the rest. It’s that simple and millions of Americans will be helped. In New York City and most cities the annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive runs multiple days which is unique to other parts of the country. City mail carriers deliver on foot by pushing a mail cart which makes it difficult to transport any additional weight. For this reason, postal officials and letter carriers continue the tradition of setting up food drive donation bins in every post office lobby throughout Manhattan and the Bronx starting Saturday, May 3 to Saturday, May 10. The week long food drive gives busy New Yorkers the opportunity to drop off food donations at any post office in Manhattan and the Bronx.
