Greater Hudson Valley, NY – USPS Westchester District officials are reaching out to communities throughout the Hudson Valley to raise public awareness of the importance of keeping walkways, sidewalks, and approaches to mailboxes clear of ice and snow this winter.
“Clearing patches of ice and snow from mailboxes and sidewalks allows our carriers to safely affect mail delivery,” emphasizes Westchester District Safety Manager Charles Eberhart. “Clear paths and sidewalks are also much safer for our family members and neighbors traveling to school, going to work, and shopping at nearby businesses,” he adds.
To make neighborhoods safer this winter, Eberhart recommends the following tips:
- Clear walkways of snow and ice to avoid slips, trips or falls.
- Keep steps clear of ice and snow and in good repair so as not to cause injury to the letter carriers or others who visit the customer’s home.
- Clear enough snow from curbside boxes to allow mail trucks to approach the box, deliver the mail, and to drive away from the box without danger or the need for backing.
- Make sure overhangs are clear and free of snow and ice to avoid injury.
