12noon – With a major snowstorm creating challenging conditions beginning later today and in the days ahead in New York City; postal officials are announcing adjustments to service.

Today, January 26, 2015
In the interest of public and employee safety, letter carriers are expected to be off the streets and off the roads and all New York City Post Offices are closing in the five boroughs as follows:

  • Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island by 3:00pm
  • Western Long Island Post Offices located in ZIP Codes that start with 110, 111 and 116 by 3:00pm
  • Manhattan and the Bronx by 4:00pm
  • Customers are recommended to deposit mail into blue collection boxes by 2pm even though some of the boxes may display later pick up times

All postal operations will be suspended in New York City. There will be no mail collections, delivery or retail operations. The weather event ramping up as described by the National Weather Bureau predicts large accumulations of snow and high winds.

During weather related emergencies postal official’s number one priority is to keep the mail and employees safe. The public’s cooperation by maintaining safe passage to walkways, sidewalks, and approaches to mailboxes helps to keep everyone safe.

Postal employees can contact the National Emergency Hotline by calling 1-888-363-7462 to learn about facility closings, changes in reporting times and other workplace information.

Customers may find Post Office facility information online at www.usps.com. Questions or comments about their mail service can also be obtained by calling the USPS Customer Care Center at 1-800-275-8777 (800-ASK-USPS).

Postal services, including buying stamps and gifts, paying for postage and Post Office Boxes, and other transactions, are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year at usps.com.
