NEW YORK, NY – With artic winds blowing through most of the metropolitan this winter, planning a tropical vacation is on the minds of many New Yorkers.  Your local post office has just what it takes to help you take the first step towards an oasis getaway. 

Apply or renew your passport at any one of the USPS Passport Service Offices located at post offices in Manhattan and the Bronx the week of February 17 – February 20, 2015 during their Passport Event.  Passport Events occur regularly at post offices throughout Manhattan and the Bronx – providing a relaxed atmosphere with postal professionals ready to make the transaction quick and easy.

Take advantage of the flexible morning and afternoon hours you have during school closings to apply for the kids passports.  

It’s a good time to check expiration dates on passports.

  • U.S. passport books and U.S. passport cards for adults are valid for 10 years.
  • U.S. passport books or U.S. passport cards for minors under age 16 are valid for 5 years.

Post Office locations that accept passport applications offer the products and services you need for a first-time passport or renewal passport application.  However, applicants may prepare passport application forms prior to visiting the post office. Instructions are provided with each set of documents. Use the Post Office Locator Tool to find a nearby Post Office that offers services. Keep in mind that some Post Offices have limited passport acceptance hours or require an appointment.

TIPS for first time passport applications

  • Be sure not sign the application until instructed to do so by the Acceptance Agent
  • Must provide the applicant’s SSN in accordance with 26 U.S.C. 6039E
  • Minors under age 16 must appear in person to apply Parental or Guardian Consent Guide (Special requirements for minors ages 16 & 17)
  • All minors regardless of age, including newborns and infants, must have their own passport when traveling internationally by air

At most locations, you can have your passport photo taken on-site for an additional fee.
Start planning your vacation getaway now.  According to U.S. Department of State applications are being processed and returned within approximately 4 to 6 weeks from the time of application.

In 2014, the Postal Service accepted approximately 6.7 million passport applications at retail locations across the country.
