Salem NY — Instead of accepting a change of address, the Shushan Post Office is filing one.

Starting Wednesday, April 29, the Salem Post Office will serve approximately 90 customers from the Washington County hamlet after the Postal Service made a decision to relocate post services away from its site at 691 County Route 64 in Shushan due to safety concerns.

Approximately 90 Shushan Post Office box holders will be assigned a post office box at the Salem Post Office, 14 West Broadway in Salem.  Affected residents will continue to use their current Shushan address, including the 12873 ZIP Code.

Box holders are encouraged to bring identification for their initial visits to the Salem office until new boxes and keys are assigned.

Postal officials also note that 275 Shushan residents receive delivery by letter carriers. While this move does not affect mail delivery, these customers will visit the Salem Post Office for pickup of oversized or signature-required items.

Shushan box holders may consider a change to street delivery of mail.    The Salem Post Office can confirm whether individuals are eligible and where to install a new mailbox.  A formal address change to street-style addressing will be required.

Weekday window hours at the Salem Post Office are 9:15 am to 1 pm and 2:30 pm until 4 pm.  The Salem lobby is open from 7:30 am until 4:30 pm.

Saturday window hours in Salem are 9:15 am to 11 am. The lobby is open from 7:30 am until 11:30 am in Salem on Saturday.

Postal customers will also find stamps available, at no added charge, at nearby locations such as, CVS, Hannaford’s and Price Chopper.

The collection box outside the current Shushan Post Office will remain in service.

No plans for a return to the Shushan Post Office have been determined at this time.
