Melville, NY — Several Long Island Post Offices will offer passport services on Veterans’ Day, although Post Offices will be closed for the holiday and there will be no mail service except for certain packages.
Postal services will resume on Thursday, November 12th.
According to World Tourism Organization, 20 million American tourists journeyed abroad through the first four months of 2015, a 7 percent increase over that period last year — and the Postal Service wants to help travelers prepare for such future excursions.
Next year, New York licenses may not be accepted as valid ID to board domestic flights within the United States. A passport is another form of ID that is accepted for flight boarding. For more information on the Real ID Act and travel, click here Licenses and domestic travel

The Postal Service offers the following passport and international travel tips:
- Apply as early as possible before a trip.
- Check the expiration date of your passport well in advance of your departure date. Some countries may not permit you to enter if your passport will expire in six months or less.
- U.S. passports are issued to adults for 10 years and children under the age of 16, for five years.
- Passport forms can be filled out online and printed from http://travel.state.govor obtained at your local Passport Application Acceptance Facility like (City) Post Office.
- Before traveling abroad, copy the identification page in case your passport is lost or stolen. If your passport is lost or stolen abroad, report the loss immediately to local police authorities and the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.
- Visit the Country Information pages on http://travel.state.govto learn more about the countries in which you are traveling.
- Register for the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) at http://travel.state.gov. When you sign up, you will automatically receive the most current information about the country where you will be. You will also receive updates, including Travel Warnings and Travel Alerts (where appropriate).
- Fill out the application (DS11), before you come to the post office – but don’t sign it.
- Bring proof of US citizenship (provide one of the following)
- Previous fully valid U.S. Passport
- Certified U.S. birth certificate
- Consular Report of Birth Abroad or Certification of Birth
- Certificate of Naturalization or Citizenship
- Proof of identity (Current, valid driver’s license – Government employee ID – Military ID)
- Children under age 16, both parents must be present.
- Lynbrook postal officials can take the photographs for a $15.00 fee per person.
The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.
