Background:

The United States Postal Service New York District Manager Lorraine Castellano for Manhattan and the Bronx boroughs and Triboro District Manager Elvin Mercado for Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island continue a yearly tradition in each district by hosting a ceremony which recognizes and thanks veterans for their service to this country.

This year the Postal Service has issued a special recognition badge to the 109,843 employed military postal veterans on record throughout the country.  The badge, encased in a lanyard, expresses thanks to each veteran for their unique services to the American people.  The new veterans’ badges will accompany the personal identification badges worn by U.S. Postal Service employees who have or continue to serve in the armed services.

The USPS continues to recognize veterans all year round through their stamp program. Over the years, more than 100 stamps images have recognized famous veterans, battles and services. Still others show the aircraft or ships that veterans use in battle.

Collectively the Postal Service stamp program is a reflection of the events and people who have built this great nation – portraying the American experience through stamps.

The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.
