BACKGROUND: |
The process which leads to a law being passed to rename a post office building is a prestigious journey. In this instance, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz initiated the request through New York Representative Jose Serrano which was supported by U.S. Senators Charles E. Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand and Congressmembers José E. Serrano, Charles Rangel, and Joseph Crowley. The Bill was co-signed by the New York Congressional Delegation and approved by the full House of Representatives. The President of the United States then signed into law the designation of the Morrisania Post Office in Honor of Congressman Herman Badillo. Former Congressman and Bronx Borough President Herman Badillo was a history maker having an exemplary political career serving NYC and the United States. Badillo became the first Puerto-Rican city commissioner and borough president, and was the first Congressman to be born in Puerto Rico. Dedication of Morrisania Post Office will be a lasting tribute to Herman Badillo’s steadfast commitment and dedication to New York City |
