Graduation at RFA is this Saturday and in eight short weeks, those students will find new horizons at colleges here and abroad.  Overseas travels and studies require a passport and, according to the Department of State, passport processing times now average six to eight weeks.

A quick trip to the Rome Post Office to file for a passport is the first stop in packing for college or for any travel that requires a passport.

To make it easier to apply, the Rome Post Office at 110 E Garden Street will host special evening hours from 5 pm to 7 pm on Tuesday June 20 and June 27 with trained passport acceptance staff for applications and passport photo services.

No appointments are necessary with Tuesday extra hours open to all for passport acceptance.

To save time and simplify the submission process, postal officials recommend bringing original documents and following these guidelines:

  • Download and complete a passport application at www.travel.state.gov beforehand.
  • Bring proper proof of US citizenship as shown on the application DS-11
  • Bring proof of identity.  This must be either: a recently issued U.S. passport; a recently issued naturalization certificate; a recently issued certificate of citizenship; or a current valid driver’s license, government ID or military photo ID.
  • Bring a photocopy of your proof of identity.  Each applicant must bring a front and back photocopy of the ID that will be submitted at the time of passport acceptance.
  • The passport application requires a recent passport photograph, 2” x 2” in size.
  • All applicants must appear in person including minors.
  • Minors under the age of 16 must appear with both parents.  If one parent is not available, a notarized authorization from the absent parent is required.
