LONG ISLAND, NY – The Freeport Post Office, located 132 W. Merrick Road,, is closed due to a package that was leaking in the dock area. The package was found to contain a chemical used in the jewelry making process. Environmental experts determined that the substance is mercury, and it will require a clean-up by environmental experts in the area.
The clean-up may extend to tomorrow. Once the chemical is properly cleaned, the office will re-open. No mail was found to be damaged from this incident.
“We are sorry for this inconvenience,” said Long Island District Manager Frank Calabrese, “but we want to ensure our customers that we take these kinds of issues seriously, in order to protect employees and our customers, and we depend upon the experts to provide guidance on how we should proceed. We will re-open as soon as the building is cleared.”
