Background: A native of New York, Leonard Montalto worked for 28 years as a clerk at a mail processing station in the Tottenville neighborhood of Staten Island, New York, before he passed away tragically during Superstorm Sandy in 2012 at the age of 53. In addition to his position as clerk, Montalto served as secretary and treasurer of the American Postal Workers Union, and he was actively running for the position of union president at the time of his passing. He was respected and well-liked because of his willingness to help other employees.
Leonard was also a devoted father of three children and a dedicated family man, who was known to take pride in his home life. Montalto was an enthusiastic collector of Beanie Babies and old coins, and he saved every document, receipt, and record possible. This public law will honor Montalto’s life and commitment to the Staten Island Community. According to the bill’s sponsor, “Staten Island lost an honest, hard-working family man when Superstorm Sandy took Leonard Montalto. He earned this simple gesture to honor his life and memory.”
