Alpheus Pierson was appointed the first Postmaster of Yonkers in May 1796. Initially, mail services to Yonkers began when the Albany Post Road was completed shortly after the Revolution. At that time mail was delivered to Philipse Manor. In 1788 mail began being delivered to Old Hunt's Tavern. Several years later mail delivery shifted to the country store of Yonkers' first postmaster, Alpheus Pierson. Today, Yonkers postal employees provide mail services to a population of 293,172 at 102,000 delivery addresses in Yonkers, Bronxville, Tuckahoe, Eastchester, and Hastings-on-Hudson. The Yonkers Main Post Office is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
