CLEVELAND, OH — One of Major League Baseball’s most revered Hall of Famers will receive a stamping ovation on Saturday as he is immortalized on the 45-cent First-Class Major League Baseball All-Stars: Larry Doby Forever stamp.
A First Day of Issue (FDOI) stamp dedication ceremony will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 21, 2012 in the Gold Room on the second floor of the Renaissance Cleveland Hotel, 24 Public Square, Cleveland, Ohio. The ceremony is being held in conjunction with the Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference. Remarks will be given by Larry Lester, Co-Chair of the Negro Leagues Committee for the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR); Bob DiBiasio, Cleveland Indians Sr. VP of Public Affairs; and Todd Hawkins, USPS Northern Ohio District Manager. The dedication ceremony is free and open to the general public.
With this issuance of the Major League Baseball All-Stars: Larry Doby stamp, the U.S. Postal Service recognizes a seven-time All-Star selection who was the first African American to play on an American League baseball team, the Cleveland Indians. The stamp art, based on historic photographs, shows Doby at bat. Illustrator Kadir Nelson worked with art director Phil Jordan to create the stamp art.
