April 22 is the annual observance of Earth Day, which promotes conservation and recycling. But for the Postal Service, every day is Earth Day. The Postal Service is working to cut vehicle petroleum consumption, eliminate all wasted facility energy and potable water, and optimize revenue from all recyclable materials. Helping it reach those goals are employees like Toledo, OH, USPS Motor Vehicle Operator Leo Brenot. He and the USPS Toledo Area Green Team are being officially presented the Sustainability Globe Award which recognizes leadership and contributions to the Postal Service’s sustainability and environmental stewardship programs. To be eligible for the award, nominees must complete an activity in one of six categories including — but, not limited to — conservation, waste reduction, pollution prevention and recycling. Brenot assumed responsibility for coordinating USPS recycling initiatives in the Toledo area in June 2012. In four months, the amount of materials 196 Toledo area postal facilities recycled increased over 600 percent, from 16,000 lbs. to over 100,000 lbs. a month. Recycling bins have now replaced trash containers in the lobbies of all facilities, resulting in a 75 percent reduction of solid waste. Brenot credits Toledo area postal employees with making the recycling initiatives a continuing success. “I’m just glad I get to do my part,” he said. Media are invited to attend the presentation on April 22. |

A self-supporting government enterprise, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that reaches every address in the nation: 152 million residences, businesses and Post Office Boxes. The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations. With more than 31,000 retail locations and the most frequently visited website in the federal government, usps.com, the Postal Service has annual revenue of more than $65 billion and delivers nearly 40 percent of the world's mail. If it were a private-sector company, the U.S. Postal Service would rank 42nd in the 2012 Fortune 500. The Postal Service has been named the Most Trusted Government Agency for seven years and the fourth Most Trusted Business in the nation by the Ponemon Institute.
